China Girls Math Olympiad: U.S. High School Teams to Compete

Another Olympiad is taking place in China this August. The 2008 China Girls Mathematical Olympiad (CGMO) will be held in Zhongshan on August 14-18, and two four-member teams of high school students from the United States will take part in the competition for the second time. Once again, the MAA is co-sponsoring the teams.

AMS Releases Second Report on the 2007 Survey of the Mathematical Sciences

The Annual Survey of the Mathematical Sciences compiles information about degree recipients, departments, faculties, and students in the mathematical sciences at four-year colleges. The Second Report on the 2007 Survey, published in the August Notices of the AMS, highlights new doctoral recipients and provides data on starting salaries and other employment information.

The First Report appeared in the February Notices of the AMS.

Alex Zhai Earns Perfect Score as U.S. Finishes Third in IMO

Alex Zhai earned one of only three perfect papers as he helped lead the U.S. team to a third place finish at the 2008 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Madrid, Spain. The gold medal marks the second for Zhai who competed in last year’s IMO in Vietnam.  

Also earning gold medals for the U.S. team were Shaunak Kishore, Colin Sandon, and Krishanu Sankar. Evan O’Dorney and Paul Christiano both earned silver medals for their efforts. 

The 2008 IMO Competition Begins

The U.S. International Mathematical Olympiad team arrived in Madrid on Saturday, July 12. After an evening of relaxing, the team visited the Palacio Real and eat lunch on the Plaza Mayor on Sunday afternoon.

The team participated in the circus-themed opening ceremonies on Tuesday afternoon. The first part of the exam, completed this morning, consisted of three problems: one in geometry, one in number theory, and one involving an inequality.

U.S. IMO Team Heads for Madrid

The six members of the U.S. International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) team departed for Madrid this morning to begin preparations for the 49th IMO.  Upon arrival in Spain, the team will take a few days to rest and overcome jetlag before taking part in the opening ceremonies on Tuesday, July 15.

The team consists of:

Shaunak Kishore, Unionville High School, Kennett Square, Pa.
