U.S. IMO Team Heads for Madrid

The six members of the U.S. International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) team departed for Madrid this morning to begin preparations for the 49th IMO.  Upon arrival in Spain, the team will take a few days to rest and overcome jetlag before taking part in the opening ceremonies on Tuesday, July 15.

The team consists of:

Paul Christiano, The Harker School, San Jose, Calif.

Shaunak Kishore, Unionville High School, Kennett Square, Pa.

Evan O’Dorney, Berkeley Math Circle, Berkeley, Calif.

Colin Sandon, Essex High School, Essex Junction, Vt.

Krishanu Sankar, Horace Mann School, Riverdale, N.Y.

Alex Zhai, University Laboratory High School, Urbana, Ill.

The IMO exam will be administered on Wednesday, July 16 and Thursday, July 17, after which the students will be taken on excursions through Spain while exams are graded and reviewed.  The awards ceremony and farewell dinner will be on Monday, July 21.

More than 100 countries will be represented at this year’s IMO as Russia attempts to repeat its 2007 first place-finish in Vietnam. The U.S. team finished fifth last year, with current team member Alex Zhai earning a gold medal for his individual performance on the exam.  The five other members of the U.S. team will be competing in their first IMO.
