U.S. Team Takes Third at International Mathematical Olympiad

Official results of the 54th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held this month in Santa Marta, Colombia, show the United States in third place, behind China (1) and South Korea (2). Russia (4) and North Korea (5) round out the top five. Complete rankings of the more than 90 countries that participated are available here.

On the individual side of the competition, United States team members Mark Sellke, Bobby Shen, James Tao, and Victor Wang took home gold medals, while Ray Li and Thomas Swayze earned silvers. Individual statistics for the United States team and overall individual rankings are available.

The oldest and largest scientific Olympiad, the IMO is a rigorous two-day math competition held each summer in a different location around the globe. Each day participants take a 4.5-hour, three-question exam featuring deceptively simple-looking problems that in fact require considerable ingenuity to solve.

Steve Dunbar, of the Mathematical Association of America's American Mathematics Competitions, declared the 2013 IMO venue "beautiful but hot" and the United States performance laudatory. "It is once again a very good international showing by the U.S. team," he said.
