Vietnam's Prime Minister Welcomes Contestants to 2007 IMO

At the opening ceremony of the 48th International Mathematical Olympiad, held in Hanoi on July 24, Vietnam's Prime Minister, Nguyen Tan Dung, greeted 523 contestants and their coaches from 95 countries. New to the IMO are contestants from Laos, Cambodia, and Saudi Arabia. The contest takes place July 25-26.

During each day of the competition, contestants will sit through an examination lasting four and a half hours. Their two examination papers will each contain three extremely difficult mathematical problems.

"This is more than just a competition for students to prove their talent for mathematics," said Nguyen Tan Dung. "The event provides a chance for them to learn from each other and exchange knowledge in other fields as well as giving them an opportunity to discover Vietnam."

Brian Lawrence, one of the U.S. team members, said he was 'Looking forward to the test and seeing some of Vietnam." In addition to time studying at home, he said "I have spent from eight to 12 hours a day preparing at the training camp. I hope it will earn me another gold medal this year."

Results are expected by July 30.
