MAA Seeks Applications and Nominations for the Project NExT Leadership Team

Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) is a professional development program of the Mathematical Association of America for new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences. Project NExT addresses all aspects of an academic career: improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, engaging in research and scholarship, and participating in professional activities.

Program Goals and Objectives

Project NExT leadership will be working with MAA elected leaders and staff to address the program goals:

  • Maintain the vitality of the program and profile within the broader mathematical sciences community.
  • Strengthen connections with other MAA programs.
  • Expand access of Project NExT programs to faculty.
  • Increased focus on fund-raising efforts for Project NExT.
  • Increase participation of Project NExT fellows in MAA activities after the conclusion of the fellowship year.

We seek applicants with (1) excellent oral and written communication skills, (2) the ability to work well within a team but also accept responsibility for specific tasks, (3) both creativity and the ability to pay close attention to details, and (4) demonstrated commitment to diversity.

The current search is for a director, an associate director, each with four-year renewable terms, and an assistant director with a two-year non-renewable term. Terms begin the week before MAA MathFest 2014. Compensation includes a negotiable mix of course release and stipend. Attendance at MAA MathFest and the Joint Mathematics Meetings is required and travel to both conferences is provided.

Position Summaries

Director (four-year renewable term): The Director reports to the MAA Deputy Executive Director (DED) and manages the Project NExT leadership team members. The Director oversees (1) the application process for program participants, including solicitation and review of applications, and selection of new fellows; (2) program planning for Project NExT sessions at MAA MathFest and the Joint Mathematics Meetings; (3) program planning for Project NExT pre-MathFest workshop. Responsible for (1) submitting periodic program reports to DED; (2) writing funding proposals; (3) working with DED to develop and implement a comprehensive evaluation plan.

Associate Director (four-year renewable term): The Associate Director reports to the Project NExT Director and assists with all aspects of the program as assigned by the Director.

Assistant Director (two-year non-renewable term): The Assistant Director reports to the Project NExT Director and assists with all aspects of the program as assigned by the Director.

  • CV, including email addresses/phone numbers for three references
  • A statement describing your experience with and interest in providing support to early-career faculty, faculty mentoring, organizing workshops/training/seminars, etc.
  • A statement describing how you propose to contribute to advancing the goals and objectives of the program.
