The first stop of this tour is Mark Twain’s historic Hartford home, where you will visit his personal library, his children’s rooms, and the famous Billiard Room where Twain worked on The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Explore the Servants’ Wing, where a bustling staff kept up with the Clemens family’s busy schedule. Next, the Harriet Beecher Stowe portion of the tour includes her 1871 Gothic Revival Home, two exhibits about the author and her famous work Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and a showing of the Day House, a 1885 Victorian Mansion on the property.

The MAA MathFest Grand Opening Reception will launch this year’s MAA MathFest on a high note. This event, intended to draw attendees together in a spirit of camaraderie, replaces the opening banquet. While scientific sessions will still commence on Thursday, we warmly invite you to enjoy complimentary light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar while you mix and mingle in the Exhibit Hall with other registered participants and guests, sponsors, and exhibitors. Join us for a free screening of CODEBREAKER, the award-winning film that tells the story of Alan Turing, mathematical genius, World War II codebreaker, and intellectual father of computer science and artificial intelligence. In the early 1950s, Turning faced terrible persecution from the British government because he was gay. The film explores this aspect of his personal life as well as his scientific achievements. What Every Math Professor Needs to Know About Statistics... and Vice Versa
Many mathematicians are called on to teach statistics or interpret statistical information, often with very little training in data analysis. Using fun examples from sports, business and other fields, we present a few key ideas of statistical thinking that help define the ways the subject is different from mathematics. And, to be fair, we look at some things statisticians can learn from mathematicians as well.
