Karen Saxe

Karen Saxe is Professor of Mathematics at Macalester College. She is the AMS/AAAS Science and Technology Policy Congressional Fellow for 2013-2014, serving as Education Policy Fellow for Senator Al Franken.

After earning her Ph.D. from the University of Oregon, she held a FIPSE post-doctoral fellowship at St. Olaf College before joining the faculty at Macalester in 1991. Karen chaired the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science from 2007 to 2013. She teaches calculus, real analysis, complex analysis, functional analysis, and interdisciplinary courses on game theory and mathematics in politics. She is passionate about undergraduate curriculum development, mentoring new faculty members, and getting kids interested in STEM fields.

She has been awarded the MAA’s North Central Section’s Distinguished Teaching Award, and the Macalester College Excellence in Teaching Award. She has served both the AWM and MAA in many ways, and is current Editor of the MAA’s Anneli Lax New Mathematical Library. Karen has been a resource in Minnesota on redistricting, and recently served on the Minnesota Citizens Redistricting Commission, created to draw congressional districts following the 2010 census.
