Title: Mathematical Modeling of Infectious Diseases

Directors: Aprillya Lanz

Email: LanzAR@vmi.edu

Dates of Program: May 19 - June 29, 2009

Summary: Mathematics modeling has become a great source for undergraduate research projects as it gives students opportunities to explore their mathematical knowledge beyond what they learn in the classroom. The topic of this year's undergraduate research experience will be on an applied mathematics problem of the modeling of epidemic diseases. In this project, students will learn how to build a mathematical model, which will include identifying the problem, determining the necessary assumptions, finding the interrelationships among the variables, setting up the model, and then solving the model itself. In this program, participants will learn how to derive each of the above steps by solving a differential model of different diseases.
