MAA Student Research Program Call for Proposals

The MAA and its Strengthening Underrepresented Minority Mathematics Achievement (SUMMA) program each year invite mathematical sciences faculty to apply for a grant to host an MAA Student Research Program at their own campus over the summer. These grants support stipends for faculty researchers and local minority undergraduates, as well as costs for student room and board for a minimum of six weeks. The MAA can fund approximately eight grants in any one year.

The information included below is provided as background for those potentially interested in submitting proposals.

Proposal preparation: During the course of the online application procedure, you will be asked to provide the following information:

  • The title of the project, name, contact information and two-page CV of project director.
  • A brief summary of the proposed project that includes the research focus as well as specific types of activities proposed.
  • A proposal narrative (as a file upload), which should not exceed three pages.
  • A budget with budget justification.
  • A letter of support.

Narrative: The project description should include details on the research focus and two sample research problems. This will be a critical factor in evaluation of the proposal. A schedule for each week of activities must be provided. You should specify the names, addresses, ethnicities, and home institutions of the minority undergraduates. The word "minority" refers to members of those groups underrepresented in the mathematical sciences, including African-Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Pacific Islanders. Please include student pre-requisites and any other information that will explain the level and nature of work that will be expected of the students. Be sure to address your expected outcomes and how you will assess the effectiveness of the project.

It must be strongly stressed to the student participants that it is expected that they will complete original research and write up their results individually or jointly in a format appropriate for publication, with formal encouragement that the results be presented in extramural venues and submitted for publication in appropriate journals. The project should provide them with training to be able to do this. The narrative should describe how this encouragement and training will be provided. Renewal proposals must list all papers submitted for publication resulting from prior NREUP-funded projects, along with their status, as well as all extramural presentations and the venues.

Budget: The budget can include up to $5,500 for a faculty stipend, but must include at least $3,500 per student stipend, and up to $2,000 per student for room and board. At least four students must be supported at each site. The maximum for each grant will be $27,500. No indirect (F&A) costs are allowed. One-page budget justification is required.

Documentation: You should include a letter of support from your department chair or an administrator in a position to commit institutional resources.

The deadline for receipt of proposals is the last Friday of February in the year in which the program is to take place. Please submit all proposal materials online. For additional information, please contact Olga Dixon at odixon@maa.org or on 202-319-8498.
