California State University Chico
Title: Knot Theory
Director(s): Thomas Mattman and Sergei Fomin
Email: TMattman@csuchico.edu
Dates of Program: June 19 - July 28, 2006
Summary: This project will give four talented undergraduate students the opportunity to work intensively on contemporary research. Thomas Mattman will lead two of the students in investigating a problem in knot theory and Sergei Fomin will work with the other two participants in studying a question in mathematical modeling. The knot theory problem deals with intrinsic knotting and linking of graphs. The Math modelling question relates to rimming flow of a thin liquid film inside a rotating cylinder. The program features eminent speakers from around the country and students will complete the program by making written and oral presentations of their work.
