Activities and Projects
- Develop and get approval to offer two new math courses for elementary education majors. Summer 2003- Spring 2004: Jim and I wrote two new courses, met with both the Elementary Education department representatives and with our department, Math/CS, to gain approval for these courses. We met several times with the Dean of Education concerning these courses. April 4, 2004: Dean's Council approval received; April 28, 2004: Approved by University-wide Curriculum Committee; April 30, 2004: Provost approval; May 4, 2004: Presidential approval received. Courses are in the new course catalogue and are listed in the requirementsfor elementary education majors for 2004-2005. The courses will beoffered beginning with the Spring 2005 term.
- Order manipulatives to be used in the deliverance of these courses. Manipulative order sheet has been filled out for our university to orderand to file for reimbursement under the grant. It has not been processedyet because we were aware that this report needed to be filed before reimbursement. We were unable to get confirmation that indeed the courses had presidentialapproval until this week [Aug. 23, 2004]. We were waiting for that before proceeding.
- Meet with in-service teachers concerning areas they felt they were lacking in their preparation. January 2004: met with Franklin School District teachers, grades K – 6, during an in-service program August 2004 – June 2005: meeting with Titusville School District teachers, grades 3 – 5, during six in-service programs
- Develop activities for use in courses for elementary pre-service teachers. Jim and I have already developed an activity for probability and technology and several geometry activities. We will continue this upon receipt of our manipulatives.
- Meet with our department members to make them aware of materials available for use in the teaching of these new courses and to encourage their use.T. B. A. This will be scheduled after we have received the materials. In particular, we will first meet with those scheduled to teach these classes. Tentatively scheduled for December 2004.
