Activities and Progress
The primary goal of this project is to develop a third course in the content mathematics sequence for elementary licensure students. The move from theold sequence (two 8-hour courses) to the new sequence (three 3-hour courses) involves changes in the existing courses and the development of a new course. The work that has been done or is in progress to date is:
- Completion of the college curriculum process to add a new course (and change existing courses);
- College-wide advising of students and affected departments (ie. the Education Department) regarding curriculum changes;
- Rethinking and shifting of topics in the first two courses of thenew three course, 9-hour sequence;
- Development of the new case-based third course.
The development of the third course is not complete; this work will continue through the fall 2004 semester. This will also include the development of a new evaluation tool to measure students mathematics content knowledge upon completion of the sequence. The new 9-hour sequence will start spring semester of 2005; students will take the third course for the first time in the Spring of 2006. Another goal of the project was to present the work done regarding mathematics content needs of elementary licensure students at the MAA conference in January of 2005. A proposal to present at the spring 2005 conference has beensubmitted to the session entitled “Drawing on Our Students” Thinking to Improve the Mathematical Education of Teachers.
