Activities and Progress
The duration of our proposal was 1 year. Given that the full proposal was not funded and that we were awarded a planning grant, our goals were adjusted. Under the planning grant our main goal was to develop the third semester of the mathematics course sequence for prospective elementary teachers. The third semester sequence will be a problem-solving capstone course. Janet Barnett, Janet Nichols and I have spent part of the spring and summer creating the course. The course description and syllabus have been written and will be submitted to the Department of Mathematics and College and University Curriculum Boards for approval in the fall. We have also gathered questions that will be part of the course notebook. Problems from all content strands of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) are included in the notebook. During the Fall of 2004, I will put the notebook together making surethat all NCTM content strands and problem solving strategies are equally represented. I will also dedicate part of the fall semester developing the gateway exam that will be used as part of the course.
