Comments on Workshops for mathematics faculty educating future elementary school teachers:

June 2003 Workshop at University of Nebraska, Lincoln NE

"I enjoyed the PMET workshop for a couple of reasons.  One, I use ideas and worksheets that we shared or were given to us to enhance my teaching, and two, visiting with colleagues from different institutions about preparing future elementary students."
Marvin Gamble, Instructor of Mathematics, University of South Dakota

"I enjoyed the opportunity to interact with other mathematicians teaching math education content and methods courses, to encounter materials used in such courses across the nation, and to observe a successful program at the University of Nebraska.  I left with ideas to improve my teaching skills, additional content topics and materials, and thoughts about improving the program at my institution. I have encouraged my colleagues teaching these courses to apply to attend a PMET workshop."
Beth Doolittle, Department of Mathematics, University of Redlands

June 2003 Workshop at Huboldt State University, in Arcata, CA
"The workshop was stimulating and helpful. I have new ideas about what to do in the class room that will bring my students to more discussions and understanding. I  met many fellow teachers of future teachers-- there is a community that is active and accessible.  I highly recommend going to a PMET workshop for anyone interested in teacher preparation."
Joel Zeitlin, Professor of Mathematics, California State University Northridge

"The PMET conference was a very enlightening and encouraging experience. It was super to gain new ideas about what to try in the classroom, and my Math for Elementary School Teachers course went much better this fall as a result.  It is wonderful to form contacts in the field."
Melissa Erdmann, Mathematics Professor, Nebraska Wesleyan University

August 2003 Workshop at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC
"The workshop provided useful materials for my classes with future teachers.  It gave me the opportunity to review elementary math curriculums and to talk with other colleagues about courses and requirements for future teachers.  The mini classroom sessions led by Sybilla Beckman were invaluable."
Linda Cooke, Instructor of Mathematics, University of South Carolina Spartanburg

"The PMET workshop on Elementary Mathematics Education is at the top of my list of academic experiences. Being part of a small culture of peple focused on the quality of the mathematics education of elementary teachers provided exciting opportunities to exchange ideas about designing and implementing high expectation curriculum."
Michael Capps, Assistant Professor of Mathematics,
Radford University

"Our experiences in the Boone Workshop were very positive. They affirmed that our conception of how to design the MEEM courses is closely in line with the current national movement calling for changes in MEEM courses. The discussion sessions, demonstration classes, and software demonstrations provided helpful models for designing our courses. "
Drs. Wei Shen Hsia and Cecelia Laurie, Department of Mathematics, University of Alabama

Comments on Workshops for mathematics faculty educating future secondary school teachers:

June 2003 Workshop at SUNY Potsdam, Potsdam, NY
"The Workshop provided a spark that has lit a fire in our Mathematics Department.   It was an intense two weeks with an unexpected IYP (Intervening Year Project) requirement.  However, the IYP proposal has led to a PMET mini-grant to support Union's new comprehensive initiative for improving the mathematical education of teachers."
Larry Ray, Professor of Mathematics, Union College, Lincoln, Nebraska

"The PMET workshop has been useful to me in a couple of ways.  I have used some of the techniques presented there in my own classes.  I also have been exposed to some ideas that I had not considered before."
Brian Hollenbeck, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Emporia State University

"Deb Ball and Hyman Bass gave a very interesting presentation on what constitutes mathematical knowledge for teaching.  It is far richer and more complex than most people have thought, and it casts questions on the traditional preparation of teachers.  They led us in some great activities that examined the mathematical knowledge embedded in a number of elementary math situations.  Their sessions were a highlight of the PMET workshop for me."
Peter Brouwer, Associate Professor, Department of Information and Communication Technology, SUNY Potsdam
