I was expecting a book that discussed the calculus needed for Computer Graphics or, more daringly, Computer Graphics in the light of calculus, but I was disappointed on both counts. This book hardly mentions Computer Graphics. It is just a calculus refresher with no proofs, no exercises, and no interesting examples.

It is a real pity to waste a title like that on a book that misses the opportunities to place calculus in a context of real applications, such as computer animation, where one can talk meaningfully about interpolation, arc-length parametrization and approximation, differential geometry of curves and surfaces, surface triangulations that try to minimize texture distortion, and much more. I hope someone takes up this challenge.

Luiz Henrique de Figueiredo is a researcher at IMPA in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His main interests are numerical methods in computer graphics, but he remains an algebraist at heart. He is also one of the designers of the Lua language.
