When the first edition of this text appeared in 1992 there were two schools of thought. You either loved the book and its approach to calculus or you hated it. There did not seem to be a middle ground. In the dozen years since that first edition the authors have remained committed to their basic approach, but they have also been open to compromise. This latest version differs from the earlier in ways that will please many earlier opponents.

The authors continue focusing on their "Rule of Four" where ideas are presented graphically, numerically, symbolically and verbally. The examples and exercises are diverse in using these four presentation modes. One strong point of the text under review is its flexibility. If you want a "lean" calculus course it can be done. At the same time, if you want an "expanded" course that can be done as well.

Users of earlier editions will notice some organizational changes, but will still recognize the flavor of the approach. This text remains the standard for the reform movement in calculus and has incorporated some of the more traditional topics without compromising the flavor.
