These volumes are both a source of historical information and themselves historical documents. Founded in 1986, “AMUCHMA” is the African Mathematical Union Commission on the History of Mathematics in Africa. Since then, the commission has produced a regular newsletter containing information on mathematics in Africa, and the first 25 years of newsletters are collected here.

The newsletters include a wide variety of resources, from book reviews and research notes to names and addresses of scholars in the field. There are notes and queries, bibliographies, abstracts of PhD theses, and announcements. The newsletters are reproduced here unchanged, with the addition of indices of African countries mentioned and of names.

These two volumes are a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of mathematics in Africa.

Fernando Q. Gouvêa is Carter Professor of Mathematics at Colby College in Waterville, ME.
