Mathematical Treasure: Gunter Quadrant

Author(s):
Frank J. Swetz (The Pennsylvania State University)

This Gunter quadrant with its case is from seventeenth century Britain.

Constructed of rosewood, the quadrant has two loop sights on its vertical radius. A plumb bob is attached to the vertex of the quadrant. It probably was used as a land surveying aid.
