Mathematical Treasure: Notes on Lectures of Weierstrass

Author(s):
Frank J. Swetz (The Pennsylvania State University)

Student notes of Karl Weierstrass’s summer lectures of 1879 on the calculus of variations, “Theorie der Variationsrechnung,” survive at the University of Pennsylvania Library (reference LJS 207). These notes were taken by an American student, Archibald Daniels, who at the time was studying at the University of Berlin. Daniels returned to the United States and became Professor of Mathematics at the University of Vermont.

Another set of Daniels's notes are described here.
