Fascinating article on the history of Gauss-Jordan reduction and the people responsible for it. Discusses methods and notations used by Gauss, Wilhelm Jordan, and B.-I. Clasen. I'd recommend this to instructors so that they can mention some of this background in class, without getting into the technical details of the methods used by Gauss, Jordan, and Clasen.

Classic linear algebra article from 1987. Provides some of the history behind Gauss-Jordan reduction.
