A detailed write up that might be useful for a professor looking for more resources on partitioned matrices and the schur compliment.

This is one of a half dozen appendices on linear algebra in an online Introduction to Finite Element Methods posted at http://www.colorado.edu/engineering/cas/courses.d/IFEM.d/. The other appendices cover vectors; matrices; determinants, inverses, and rank; eigenproblems; and matrix calculus. All are engineering handbook-style summaries of what's true. Detailed explanations and proofs must be found elsewhere, but examples are given. References are listed in another appendix. My rating applies to all the appendices on linear algebra.
