Mathematical Biology: Beyond Calculus

Raina Robeva, Terrell Hodge, Robin Davies, Timothy Comar
June 13-18, 2010
Sweet Briar College
Sweet Briar, Virginia

Registration Fee: $175 per person/$250 per team of two by April 30, $250/$400 after

Problems from gene regulation, biochemical reaction networks, DNA sequencing, and phylogenetics, constitute a cross-section of challenges in modern molecular and systems biology. This workshop will focus on such problems at levels appropriate for classroom projects and student research. Along with the underlying biology, participants will learn to build models using finite dynamical systems, Boolean networks, linear, polynomial, and abstract algebra, and probabilistic methods. Those who have attended prior Mathematical and Computational Biology workshops by the organizers are welcome, as the primary focus this time will be on methods beyond calculus. We encourage attendance by Mathematics-Biology faculty teams from the same institution.

General undergraduate-level background in calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, elementary probability, graph theory, Boolean logic, and Boolean algebra, is assumed. No specific background in biology, mathematical biology, or computational algebra systems will be required.

Workshop participants should plan on arriving on Sunday (June 13) morning or afternoon and departing on Friday afternoon (June 18). The workshop activities will begin on Sunday evening around 6 pm and end on Friday around noon. Room and board from Sunday night through Friday noon are covered by the workshop budget and included in the registration fee. A tentative schedule for the workshop can be fond here. Please note that until the schedule is finalized in mid-May, some of the topics, presenters, and scheduled times may be changed without further notice.
