Active Learning Approaches and Visual Methods for Teaching the Foundational Mathematics for Elementary Teachers Courses

Early classroom experiences are crucial in shaping a child's lifelong attitudes towards mathematics, and the endeavor of making these initial encounters positive and encouraging begins with the appropriate preparation of preservice teachers. Future teachers must be provided with a robust background, effective tools, and strong motivation to be knowledgeable, confident, and enthusiastic mathematics teachers. We invite collegiate mathematics faculty new to, or seeking to improve proficiency in, designing and teaching the foundational mathematics courses for preservice K–8 teachers to attend our workshop.

Participants will:

• Join collegiate educators interested in advancing the mathematical education of future K–8 teachers.
• Work in a hands-on, interactive environment using visual methods and active learning, and learn how to model appropriate pedagogical techniques.
• Create dynamic activities, lesson plans, and course plans for their own courses.
• Be introduced to the content and structure of special topics mathematics education courses offered by the workshop leaders.

Participants will also be provided with an electronic set of resourcesusing exemplary materials from our successful mathematics education program for preservice K-8 teachers. These resources will include:

• Effective, tested, course plans, lesson plans, class activities, and homework activities.
• Flexible, adaptable planning guides/teacher notes for teaching all or part of the foundational mathematics course sequence in a variety of environments.
• References for useful web and national resources.
