Title: Exact Solutions to Integrable Nonlinear Evolution Equations

Directors:

  • Tuncay Aktosun

Email:

Dates of Program: June 1 - July 30, 2011

Summary:

There are various nonlinear partial differential equations and difference equations known as integrable evolution equations. They describe wave propagation in nonlinear media and have important applications in various areas such as surface water waves in canals, electromagnetic waves in optical fibers, and pumping of blood from the heart.

Integrable nonlinear evolution equations possess certain solutions that can be expressed explicitly in terms of elementary functions. In our project, four minority students obtain research experience by analyzing various integrable evolution equations in a systematic way, deriving explicit solution formulas for them, studying properties of such solutions, and visualizing the time evolution of those solutions by developing Mathematica codes. In addition to gaining basic research and computational skills, the student researchers will learn about opportunities at the graduate level and will gain skills to present and disseminate research findings.
