Title: Recursive & Iterative Functions and the Art Gallery Problems

Director: Jessica Deshler

Email: deshler@math.wvu.edu

Dates of Program: June 23 - August 3, 2013

Summary:

Students will spend this summer investigating two research problems under guidance of faculty members Jessica Deshler, Marjorie Darrah, and instructor Ryan Hansen. The first set of problems investigates recursive and iterative functions used to find ‘good’ solutions to problems through dynamic programming. Students will gain experience exploring arrays, loops and fixed points through programming. The second set of problems is called The Art Gallery problems, and investigates a real-world problem of guarding an art gallery with the minimum number of guards or cameras. The gallery is represented by a polygon and approached through computational geometry. Students will extend solutions to other real-world situations, learn basic theorems and explore open problems in the field.
