About the Author: (from The American Mathematical Monthly, vol. 80, (1973)) R.J. Wilson did his undergraduate work at Balliol College, Oxford, and his graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania and MIT. His Penn Ph.D. on sieve methods was written under N.C. Ankeny. He was a Lecturer at Jesus College, Oxford, and now is Lecturer at Open University. The present article is derived from his lectures at the Combinatorial Analysis Institute, Bowdoin College. He is the author of Introduction to Graph Theory (Oliver & Boyd, Edinburgh, 1972).
