About the Author: (from Mathematics Magazine, Vol. 63 (1990)) Ranjan Roy is professor of mathematics at Beloit College. He received his Ph.D. from SUNY at Stony Brook under Irwin Kra in 1973. His mathematical interests lie in differential equations, complex analysis, special functions, and the history of mathematics. His hobbies include handball and soccer.
