About the Author: (from Mathematics Magazine, Vol. 57 (1984)) Frederick Gass attended Phillips Academy, received a bachelor's degree from DePauw University with majors in mathematics and Romance languages, and received a Ph.D. in mathematics from Dartmouth College in 1968. He has been on the faculty of Miami University since 1968 except for one year spent as Visiting Scholar at Talladega College. Writing this article has satisfied a long-standing desire to popularize concepts that he has enjoyed privately since graduate school.
