About the Author (from The College Mathematics Journal Volume 7, Number 2, (1976)): Anneli Lax, Professor of Mathematics at New York University, is editor of the New Mathematical Library, a series of expository monographs written for interested high school and college students and originally sponsored by the School Mathematics Study Group; it was taken over by the MAA n 1975.  She earned the Ph.D. in Mathematics at New York University in 1955.
