Summary: This article addresses Kuratowski's question, "If two spaces have the fixed point property, then does their cartesian product have the fixed point property?"  The answer (which is "no") is attained needing little background information to understand the main points.

About the Author: (from The American Mathematical Monthly, vol. 89, (1982)) Robert F. Brown received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin where he was a student of Edward Fadell. He has since been at UCLA except for a visiting Professorship at the University of Arizona and two sabbatical years at the University of Warwick, England. His research area is algebraic topology, with a particular interest in fixed point theory.
