Was Newton's Calculus a Dead End? The Continental Influence of Maclaurin's Treatise of Fluxions

Summary: This article shows that, contrary to many common conventions, the "Treatise on Fluxions" of Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin did develop important ideas and techniques, and it did influence mainstream mathematics on the Continent.
