Activities
These
are teachers' favorites in our experience. They direct
students through a procedure or calculation, allowing them to "discover"
the desired conclusion. Often, they allow students to vary parameters, so that
they may "ask questions," but the context is strictly "prepared"
by the instructor through printed handouts and on-line instruction that determine
a linear, sequential path through the material. Teachers can incorporate these
activities in their courses and labs with a minimum of effort: install the software
on laboratory computers, duplicate lab instructions, and hand them out to the
students.
