This is an AMS/Chelsea reprint of a book that first appeared in the Annals of Mathematics Studies series in 1976. The Telegraphic Review published in 1976 described it as "A survey of results on the classification of 3-manifolds. Includes connections with group theory, a chapter on the Poincaré Conjecture, and a chapter on open problems. A possible second graduate course in topology, if the first includes algebraic topology." According to the author's preface to this edition, updates will be posted at http://www.ams.org/bookpages/chel-349 -- but as of this writing nothing is posted at that URL.
