This is a Dover reprint of a text first published in 1980. At the time, a Telegraphic Review described it as follows: "The basic principles of continuum mechanics are presented at a level appropriate for undergraduate study. Introductory chapters cover material on matrix algebra, vectors and tensors used in the remainder of the book."

A longer review appeared in SIAM Review in July 1983 and is accessible through JSTOR. The reviewer describes the book as a "nicely written brief introduction" and deems it suitable for use with advanced undergraduates.

2. Introductory matrix algebra.
3. Vectors and cartesian tensors.
4. Particle kinematics.
5. Stress.
6. Motions and deformations.
7. Conservation laws.
8. Linear constitutive equations.
