See our review of the first edition. In their preface, the authors note that

The first edition considered three major approaches to computational science problems: system dynamics models, empirical modeling, and cellular automaton simulations. The second edition includes two additional computational approaches: agent-based simulations and modeling with matrices.

The additions should make the book still more attractive to those seeking to teach modeling and simulation with very few pre-requisites. The modular structure of the book makes it fairly easy to pick and choose topics. So that instructors may find it a source of good examples even if they decide to use another textbook.

Fernando Q. Gouvêa is Carter Professor of Mathematics at Colby College in Waterville, ME. He is the editor of MAA Reviews.
