This is a Dover reprint of a book that was originally published in 1971. The book covers iterative methods for the solution of linear systems of equations including the Jacobi and Gauss-Seidel iterations, Successive Over Relaxation (SOR), Symmetric Successive Over Relaxation (SSOR), and Alternating Direction Implicit (ADI) methods. The book includes many results on the convergence of the methods, convergence rates, and selection of optimal parameters.

Young’s book was written before the introduction of modern Krylov space methods and preconditioning techniques. Although it may be of some historical interest, it can no longer be recommended as an up-to-date reference on iterative methods for linear systems of equations. A contemporary reference that covers newer approaches is Yousef Saad, Iterative Methods for Sparse Linear Systems (2nd ed., SIAM, 2003).

Brian Borchers is a professor of Mathematics at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. His interests are in optimization and applications of optimization in parameter estimation and inverse problems.
