Area approximation

Leonardo of Pisa (a.k.a. Fibonacci) gave the following rule in his Practical Geometry of the early thirteenth century: To find the area of an equilateral triangle, square its side, and then subtract from the square a third and a tenth of the length of the side.  Why is this a very close approximation?
