New MAA Director of Meetings and Facilities

Peter F. Smith, the MAA’s new director of meetings and facilities, joined the MAA in February with more than 25 years of experience in handling meetings and conventions. Peter has been a conference planner with the American Mathematical Society over the past 1½ years. Before that, he spent more than 20 years as an entrepreneur who built a nationally recognized convention-services management and production company in central Florida. Peter’s company spent many years producing business meetings and conventions for America’s Fortune 500 companies and national associations from coast to coast and abroad prior to the company’s sale in 2006.

“I am excited about this opportunity to apply my dynamic marketing and logistics skills to the continuing growth of MAA’s meetings and conferences in the coming years,” says Peter. “Over the past year, I have been warmly welcomed into the mathematics community and feel honored that I have been an instrumental part in helping mathematicians share their ongoing research and collaborations. I believe that the MAA’s professional development programs, publications, and conferences play a fundamental role in the teaching and learning of the mathematical sciences, and I am honored to be here.”

He also reminds us to “Mark your calendars now so that I have an opportunity to meet you at MAA MathFest this summer in Madison, Wisconsin.”
