MAA's NSF project "Supporting Assessment in Undergraduate Mathematics" (SAUM) invites submission of case studies of assessment of student learning. The focus of SAUM is not on individual courses but on curricular blocks of undergraduate mathematics. Assessments in any of the following six areas are of particular interest:

  • Mathematics major
  • Mathematics for teachers
  • General education (or quantitative literacy) programs
  • Placement/developmental programs
  • Mathematics for and in mathematics-intensive majors
  • Innovations

Case studies that are submitted will be considered for publishing on this site, http://www.maa.org/SAUM/index.html. Examples of case studies can be found in MAA Notes #49, Assessment Practices in Undergraduate Mathematics, which have been posted on this site, http://www.maa.org/SAUM/maanotes49/index.html.

Case studies should provide the information outlined below in no more than 2,500 words. Case studies should be written as if to be read by a college curriculum committee that consists mostly of people outside mathematics. We recommend that the author(s) follow this outline unless another approach will work better in presenting a clear description of the assessment design and results.

    Abstract (50-75 words)

Background and goals: What did we hope to accomplish?

    Description: What did we do?

    • Developing the assessment program
    • Details of the assessment program
    • Revisions based on initial experience (if applicable)

    Insights: What did we learn?
    • Findings and success factors
    • Use of the findings
    • Next steps and recommendations,

    Acknowledgements

Some case studies will be selected for inclusion in a published volume similar to MAA Notes #49.
