MAA DEPARTMENT LIAISONS PROGRAM

In the fall of 1995, the MAA launched the MAA Department Liaison Program to link mathematics departments across the nation with the MAA. Built on the old MAA Representative Program, this new program established an important two-way communication link between departments and the MAA. On a regular basis during the academic year, the MAA sends Liaisons information about MAA's many services and programs including new publications, electronic services, professional development activities, programs for students, women and minorities, and meetings through bimonthly newsletters. Liaisons are asked to serve as a resource for this information to their department colleagues and to respond with comments and suggestions from them for ways the MAA can better serve their department.

Another important goal of the MAA Liaisons Program is to strengthen the ties between departments and MAA Sections. Section officers are informed of the names and addresses of the MAA Department Liaisons within their Sections so they can communicate directly with Liaisons on matters of importance to the Sections. Some sections link Liaisons electronically, and others bring Liaisons together at Section meetings.

The MAA's goal is to have every mathematical/science department in the US and Canada represented by a liaison in order to facilitate effective communication. If your department would like to learn more about the program or nominate a new Liaison please see the attached list of responsibilities. If the current Liaison for your department has changed please notify Hal Nesbitt at hnesbitt@maa.org at MAA Headquarters. If you have other questions about the program or the committee, please contact David Stone, chair of the committee.
