Student Hospitality Center
By Richard Neal
The Student Hospitality Center at the Joint Mathematics
Meetings in Washington, DC was host to several events. The location,
adjacent to the Exhibit Area, afforded students a convenient place to
stop, visit, relax and enjoy some refreshments provided by the MAA.
Students also participated in working math puzzles and reading copies
of ’Math Horizonsâ?. The information table at the
hospitality center included brochures on how to start a MAA Student
Chapter, REU opportunities, along with pamphlets on how to give a talk,
and how students can plan for attending the big meetings. Colorful
posters were also available for students at no charge. Dr. Richard Neal
and Araceli Neal oversee the Student Hospitality Center at both the JMM
and MathFest.
This year, the Undergraduate Student Reception was held in the
hospitality center. Students enjoyed pizza and soda during the student
reception. At the reception, students were greeted by Kay Somers, Chair
of the MAA Committee on Student Activities, and by Robert Vallin,
Associate Director of Student Programs for the MAA.
Students also conversed with prominent speakers in round table
discussions at the ever growing Meet
the Speaker events (see article on meeting Nathaniel
Dean). In addition, students enjoyed refreshments of fruit
punch and
candy each day of the meeting at the center. The accompanying picture

Hospitality Area.
