Q. How do I submit an abstract?
A. You must submit your
abstract online using the webform, which will be available soon.
Q. Can I submit a
poster on research in the history of mathematics or mathematics
education?
A. Abstracts in both topics are welcome. Research in mathematics education includes qualitative and quantitative analyses of topics related to the teaching and learning of mathematics. Research in the history of mathematics should use appropriate primary sources and recognized scholarly techniques of investigation. In either case, your faculty advisor can help you decide if your project is a good topic for a poster.
Q. Are there travel funds available to participate in the Poster Session?
A. Yes, you can
apply for a travel grant of up to $600 if you agree to attend certain lectures and events at the Joint Meetings. In addition, there are several things you can do to obtain money from your institution. Have your advisor notify the Department Chair and the Dean of your intentions to travel. There may be some funds available through your department to assist you with the trip. Also, many student government associations have money allocated by the University to fund student presentation travel. You will need to approach the student government office to find out if such funds exist and what their policy is in distributing the money. Sometimes, the Office of Sponsored Research reserves funds for student travel. You will need to contact the director of sponsored research on your campus to discover if student travel money exists. You may not get all your funding in one place and you may also be only partially funded. However, if you begin your search early you will probably be able to secure at least partial support for your efforts.
Q. Can I bring my own poster board?
A. You can bring your own board, however the dimensions must be the standard self-standing tabletop posters that are 48" wide, 36" high and are tri-fold. The following picture is an example of what the poster board looks like:
Q. What do I need to do to participate in the conference?
A. You will need to register for the conference and we recommend you register by the early registration deadline. Registration will open in the coming months.
Q. How do I obtain housing?
A. Because many of the conference sites are held in large convention centers, nearby hotels can become pricey. To keep costs down, we recommend you register as early as possible. Hotels are allocated through the Joint Meeting registration form on a first come first served basis. We also try to coordinate roommates among Poster Session participants as part of your abstract submission form. Again, we recommend that you put in your request as early as possible. It is difficult to find housing at the last minute.
Q. What if there is poor weather or other complications that do not allow me to travel as planned to Washington? Will my participation be recognized?
A. All students will receive a certificate as part of their participation in the session. In emergency cases where you were not able to attend due to weather or other travel complications, your certificate will be mailed to you.
