2013 Mathematical Study Tour to Alaska

July 9-17, 2013
Sitka, Hobart Bay, Juneau, Glacier Bay & More

An Educational Tour organized with Alaskan Dream Cruises.

Experience Alaska's inside passage with the MAA on a small ship cruise with Alaskan Dream Cruises.

Get up close to thundering tidewater glaciers and see stunning wilderness through the eyes of expert naturalists, Expedition Leaders, and First Nations interpreters. Cruise from Sitka to legendary Glacier Bay National Park, stop at Juneau, the state capital, and visit out-of the-way exclusive places like Hobart Bay. Participate in special on-board evening programs designed for MAA travelers concerning the challenges of educating the population spread across the largest state in the Union and teaching about native Alaskan mathematics.

Day 1 | Arrive in Sitka

Transfer from the airport to hotel is included. Pre-departure night lodging, special welcome dinner buffet for MAA travelers, and breakfast the next morning at the Westmark Sitka Hotel is included.

Day 2 | Sitka/Transfer to Baranof Dream

Explore Sitka’s popular attractions: Sheldon Jackson Museum, Russian Bishop’s house and St. Michael’s Cathedral. Board a deluxe tour boat for a “Sea Otter & Wildlife Quest” excursion into beautiful Sitka Sound. Transfer to the Baranof Dream vessel, our home base for the remainder of the trip.

Day 3 | Glacier Bay National Park

A Glacier Bay National Park Service Ranger leads our programming and a Native Huna Tlingit interpretive naturalist joins us to reveal traditional ties to this ancient treasure, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 4 | Juneau & Orca Point Lodge

Highlights of the day include the massive Mendenhall Glacier, a soaring ride on the Mount Roberts Tram, and dinner ashore on Colt Island at Orca Point Lodge.

Day 5 | Tracy Arm

We will explore the full length of this glacier-carved, jade-green fjord; tracing the sheer granite face of cliffs that rise 4,000 feet above the sea, punctuated by a multitude of waterfalls.

Day 6 | Hobart Bay

Enjoy exclusive Hobart Bay and our wilderness adventure base camp, outfitted with sea kayaks, small outboard-driven Zego runabouts, and all-terrain vehicles giving travelers access to water and wilderness.

Day 7 | Petersburg

Charming Petersburg is a fishing town established by Norwegian fishermen in the late 1800s. Enjoy time to explore the town.

Day 8 | Kake

In this traditional Tlingit Indian village, see the "World’s Largest Totem", carving demonstration, a salmon hatchery and a bear viewing platform.

Day 9 | Disembark in Sitka
