The eleventh annual U.
S. National Collegiate Mathematics Championship was held at Madison,
Wisconsin during MathFest, 2008. The championship is the final event of
the year for The Problem Solving Competition, a competition conducted
locally at colleges and universities. Thirty-five undergraduate students
representing colleges and universities across the U.S. competed during
MathFest by attempting to solve math problems from a range of areas
including linear algebra, combinatorics, calculus, number theory, and
more. The first place finisher was Dmytro Yeroshkin, a 20 year-old
junior from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. Second place went
to Edward Newkirk, a 21 year-old junior from Williams College. Third
place was awarded to Fred Johnson, a 20 year-old sophomore from Harvey
Mudd College. Winning fourth place was Thomas Mussmann, a 19 year old
freshman from the U. S. Military Academy. Winning fifth was Zachary
Mitchell of Hope College. Tying for sixth were Qi Gar from Iowa State
University, Alison McDonough from Smith College, and Mike Nasti from
the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
All 35 students received beautiful silver U.S. Medallions and red, white,
and blue t-shirts. The top six finishers receive red, white, and blue
plaques. Mathematics departments for each of the top six winners also receive
red, white, and blue plaques commemorating their student's
accomplishment. For information on The Problem Solving Competition and
