The Joy of Thinking The Joy of Thinking is a program designed to increase interest and enthusiasm for scientific reasoning and mathematical activities among preadolescent and adolescent girls. The program is funded by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in conjunction with the Tensor Foundation. The primary focus is the implementation of girls' math clubs in local area middle schools. Summer Education Enrichment in Math (SEE-Math) SEE-Math is a two week, half day summer program. Each grade studies a particular topic. For example, in 2005, 6th graders studied Cartan and Cauchy Groups, 7th graders studies the Hilbert Group, and 8th graders studied the Descartes group. There was also an optional class for all grades on computer animation using Maple. Website: http://www.math.tamu.edu/outreach/SEE-Math Type of Program: Summer Target Group: Middle School
Science: It's A Girl Thing Science: It's A Girl Thing offers three separate one-week residential camps, each devoted to a particular grade level. This camp is designed to excite young females' interests in science and mathematics and addresses a range of topics in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and several branches of engineering. The camp has been running for about ten years and this year approximately 300 young girls participated in the program. Website:

Women and Mathematics Mentoring Program The purpose of this program is to make 8th grade girls more aware of the different careers that use mathematics, science, and technology, and to encourage the girls to begin preparing for such careers in high school by enrolling in higher-level mathematics courses. GE2McS (Girls Excited about Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science) The GE2McS program is aimed at increasing the number of girls and women studying and entering technical careers in engineering, mathematics, and computer science. This multi-faceted program combines day-long programs with hands-on workshops for middle and high school students, with Saturday morning programs focusing on specific fields. The day-long programs are designed for students, teachers, and guidance counselors, while the Saturday sessons are geared toward students and parents. Splash This project-based math and science summer enrichment program brings 30 middle school girls to the Seattle University campus for four weeks each summer. The students work in teams under the guidance of professional mentors on topics such as studying the optimal angle for sailing into the wind, investigating a fake glider crash, or calculating the surface area and volume of a Sierpinski pyramid. During the academic year they return for a project day which culminates in a mini-science fair to which families, teachers and friends are invited. MASTER IT Mathematics and Science to Explore caReers-Investing Together is a one-week summer residential program at Emporia State University held in June each year. MASTER iT targets young women in the state of Kansas who have completed seventh or eighth grade. This program includes hands-on investigations of mathematical and scientific concepts and career discussions led by university women faculty and women professionals from industry. The group also makes a variety of field trips which might include visiting a nuclear power plant, go on a fossil dig, have a star gazing evening, or visiting the Kansas Cosmosphere. The charge for this summer camp is $250. The program has been subsided by small grants. Several need-based scholarships are available. For more information, contact Dr. Marvin Harrell at harrellm@emporia.edu, or Dr. Betsy Yanik at yanikeli@emporia.edu. Type of Program: Summer Target Group: Middle School
Expanding Your Horizons Emporia State University hosts an Expanding Your Horizons conference each year on a Saturday in March. This day-long conference is designed to expose girls in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades to a variety of math and science careers and activities. Over 50 women professionals from across the state of Kansas volunteer their time to lead career discussions and hands-on workshops with the young women. Each year there are two major presentations made by two prominent women scientists. Enrollment is limited to 220 girls. There is a $15 registration fee for the girls, which includes instructional materials, lunch, and a conference t-shirt. There is also an adult program for teachers and parents. If you have any questions about the program, please contact Dr. Marvin Harrell at harrellm@emporia.edu, or Dr. Betsy Yanik at yanikeli@emporia.edu Type of Program: One-day ProgramTarget Group: Middle school girls
