Sonia Kovalevsky Mathematics Day at Emporia State University
Sonia Kovalevsky Mathematics Day is held on a Thursday in February at Emporia State University. This day-long conference is designed to honor and encourage high school women in their junior year who have shown promise in mathematics. The 25 public high schools located within a sixty mile radius around Emporia State are invited to identify deserving students. Each school sends a mathematics teacher to accompany between two and six of their students to this event. The day's activities include hands-on workshops, career discussions, a luncheon speaker, and a group problem-solving event. Separate sessions are held for the teachers. The students are awarded certificates at the end of the day honoring their accomplishments in mathematics.
