Deanna Haunsperger

Deanna Haunsperger was MAA president (2017-2018) and Professor of Mathematics at Carleton College, where she has been teaching for over twenty years.  She earned her BA in mathematics and computer science from Simpson College and her PhD in mathematics from Northwestern University, focusing on voting theory applications to decision making.

Dedicated to increasing the number of women earning advanced degrees in mathematics, Professor Haunsperger and her husband and fellow mathematician Stephen Kennedy created the Carleton College Summer Mathematics Program for Women, and have directed it for eighteen summers.  The community of women built by this program, whose members started as undergraduates, now boasts over 85 PhDs in Mathematics or a Mathematical Science, with over 60 members currently in graduate school in mathematics.  Haunsperger was recognized in 2012 by the AWM with the M. Gweneth Humphreys Award for Mentorshop of Undergraduate Women in Mathematics.  The AMS recognized this program as a 2014 Program That Makes a Difference.

Haunsperger’s passion working with students has led her to serve the MAA as co-Editor of Math Horizons, Second Vice President, Chair of the Strategic Planning Group on Students, Chair of the Council on Outreach Programs, and co-Chair of the Centennial Planning Committee, among many other committees.  She also is on the Board of Directors of Pro Mathematica Arte, which oversees the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics, and she is co-Chair of the Human Resources Advisory Committee and on the Board of Trustees of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute.

In her spare time, Deanna enjoys spending time with her grown children, Sam and Maggie, traveling with her family, and eating good food with good friends.
