MAA Found Math - Week 45

2015 MAA Found Math - Week 45

Found by Todd Swanson (Hope College, Holland, MI) was this submission to ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was constructed with Lego bricks by Chuck Cusack and is titled Latin Square Squared. The artist describes the main structure as a simple perfect squared square (a square made up of smaller squares each of different sizes.) Each smaller square is a Latin square. Some of these squares go beyond representing a single Latin square and represent sets of mutually orthogonal Latin squares, so that when two such squares are superimposed on top of each other, every possible ordered pair of colors appears exactly once.
