About the Lecture and Speaker:

Dr. Scott Williams in a mathematician, poet, and artist blacksmith. He spent most of his career as a research mathematician at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Buffalo. As a topologist, he often interacted with former students of Robert L. Moore. In spite of Moore’s outright racist actions, his student, John Kline, was the advisor of Dudley Woodard and William Claytor, the second and third African Americans to earn Ph.D. in mathematics. Williams often wondered about other Black mathematicians which led him to create the highly visible website “Mathematicians of the African Diaspora.” Dr. Talitha Washington of Howard University will lead a conversation with Williams who will share the intimate untold stories of African Americans who persevered through racial obstacles to become successful mathematicians.
