MAA Supports Summer Math Research for Underrepresented Groups

Washington, D.C. -- The Mathematical Association of America announced $324,018 in funding for 10 colleges and universities to offer a summer research experience with a stipend for students from historically underrepresented groups in mathematics as part of the Strengthening Underrepresented Minority Mathematics Achievement program. The National Research Experience for Undergraduates Program is supported by the National Science Foundation (DMS-1652506).

NREUP is designed to reach minority students at a critical point in their career path - midway through their undergraduate programs. As coursework becomes more abstract and students are required to work independently, a strong connection to a faculty mentor that is established during a summer with NREUP can help retain students in higher mathematics courses.

“We are proud to support research opportunities for promising young mathematicians from underrepresented groups through the MAA National Research Experience for Undergraduates program. This National Science Foundation funding allows the MAA to increase the type of summer research experiences that can shape a student’s future career as a mathematician,” said Michael Pearson, executive director of the Mathematical Association of America.
